Crime Prevention Advice:-
To prevent residential burglary, secure all entry points by locking doors and windows (even when home), use timer switches for lights to simulate occupancy, and install visible deterrents like alarms, CCTV, and security lighting. Utilize the “WIDE(N)” approach (Windows, Interior, Doors, Exterior, Neighbours) to significantly reduce risk.
Securing Your Home (WIDE Method)
- Windows: Lock all windows, especially on the ground floor. Consider window locks for extra security.
- Interior: Use automatic timer switches for lamps to create the impression of occupancy when away, rather than leaving a single light on all night.
- Doors: Lock all doors, including UPVC doors, which often require lifting the handle and turning the key to lock securely (deadlocking).
- Exterior: Install motion-activated, low-energy security lighting at the front and back.
- Neighbours (N): Look out for neighbours’ properties and report suspicious activity to the police.
